Support on Anglesey for children and their families

Mencap Cymru is proud to have been supporting families of children with additional learning needs on Anglesey for the past three years. Our project meets the need for high-quality support for the children, and their families, in their early years.

This is a fantastic opportunity to develop our parent support networks on Anglesey, creating spaces where families can connect, share experiences, and support one another through challenges.

Our goals:

With this funding we will:

  • Expand our network of parents and carers of children with additional learning needs
  • Deliver a series of family activity sessions e.g., forest school, sensory play sessions, toy library and workshops.
  • Co-deliver with parents the EPAtS programme (Early Positive Approaches to Support) to support family carers of children from 0 – 7
  • Build on the learning from our open access hub project by offering further opportunities for families to access holistic support while they wait for diagnosis and access to specialist services.

Families on Anglesey have told us they struggle to find affordable and suitable activities for their children during the summer break.

This funding has enabled us to deliver a summer programme where families and children could play together, and have fun!

For many families, this is their first-ever opportunity to take part in an activity where their child is truly included and welcomed.

“I cannot stress enough how important it’s been for my children this summer holidays. It’s something regular it’s something safe it’s something different as well. Without this summer programme my children wouldn't have been going out as much as they have been." - Parent supported during our summer programme in Anglesey.

We have recently recruited a Family Connector to provide additional support.

This role, sees a person with lived experience of raising a child with a learning disability , walking the journey with parents through the joys and challenges.

They support with connecting families and organising social activities for the children, driving changes across local services and ensuring the voices of parents on Anglesey are heard.
